  • March 1968 –the 1960s had seen significant growth in the size and scope of the BWRA, including its involvement in training. Although in general these activities complemented those of the Institute of Welding, it became apparent that the two organisations would serve industry better by merging
A merger was agreed and a new body was formed, The Welding Institute. The combined income of the two parts resulted in the new organisation exceeding £1m in its first year.

  • 1970 - Direct support from Government departments ceased but The Welding Institute (TWI) not only survived the funding crisis but grew rapidly to become the foremost independent organisation offering contract research on welding and joining. It sought Industrial Members who, by paying an annual subscription, became owners of the organisation. Membership subscriptions are invested in a core research programme, the results of which are available to Industrial Members. Additionally, Members can commission confidential work in the laboratories or from expert consultants visiting its premises.

  • Currently - The Welding Institute is a long way from where it started with offices and laboratories throughout the UK and facilities overseas including the USA, China, South East Asia, South America and the Middle East.
