The Welding Institute Awards and Nominations 2009 - recognising achievement in welding and joining

The Council of the Welding Institute confers a number of awards on an annual basis. The categories are listed below and you will find a brief description and the requirements for citation by clicking on the link.

Proposers should make nominations online. Please complete and submit the nomination form.

Only properly completed nominations can be considered by TWI's Awards Committee.

Please carefully observe the requirements for citations.

How to Nominate

  1. Select the award that is most appropriate to the nominee's achievements and ensure that the nominee meets all of the necessary award criteria.
  2. Write a justification (< 100 words) stating how and why the nominee satisfies the award criteria.
  3. Write a summary of achievements relevant to the award, including references to supporting published work. The summary must explain what the nominee has achieved and be suitable for use as the basis of the award citation.
  4. Complete the electronic nomination form, ensuring that all contact details for the nominee and yourself are completed.
  5. Forward the nomination form to : twiawards@twi.co.uk

The Brooker Medal, sponsored by Johnson Matthey plc, is awarded in recognition of the recipient's personal contribution to the science, technology and industrial exploitation of materials joining. It recognises high industrial, research or educational responsibility of a character which has beneficially influenced the advancement of materials joining technology.

Bevan Braithwaite Award was a new award for 2008 and is made in recognition of the recipient's enterprise to the benefit of welding and joining. It recognises enthusiastic and passionate promotion of a vision, and strategic drive to cause that vision to become a successful reality. A positive thinker and a decision-maker, the recipient will have shown persistence and determination in the face of challenges, and will have been innovative and resourceful in managing risks and persuading others to take advantage of opportunities to start new organisations or revitalise existing organisations. Enterprising activities may be substantially different depending on the type of organization and sphere of influence. They may range from solo projects to major undertakings and may benefit welding and joining in a variety of ways, including; development of new markets, discovery of new sources of materials, mobilisation of capital resources, introduction of new technologies, creation of employment, and generation of economic growth.

The Leslie Lidstone Medal, sponsored by ESAB Group UK, is awarded annually to the person under 40 years of age who is deemed to have made the most significant contribution, not associated with the manufacture and supply of welding consumables and equipment to the advancement of welding technology during the period of five years proceeding the year of the award.

The Larke-Lillicrap Award is awarded annually to the individual or team who has had most influence or impact upon the practical application of novel welding or joining knowledge or technology. The subject may be presented in a published academic or research paper but the nomination will be assessed on its practical application value and impact on welding and joining in real-world engineering. Engineering project applications may well be used to support nominations but it is essential that the technical content has been published to the benefit of the welding and joining community.

Members and Branches of the Welding & Joining Society are invited to make nominations for this award, which is offered in recognition of outstanding contributions to The Welding Institute on a national basis, as a result of which the position of the Institute has been significantly advanced.

Richard Dolby - Rolls Royce Prize is conferred biennially by the WJS Younger Members' Committee to a young person with no more than five years' work experience after completing full time education.
