TWI Frequently asked questions

What is the usual application process for Professional Membership?

The Application Process for standard route applicants consists of the following stages:

  • Optional submission of CV to the Institute staff for a recommendation on suitable class of membership
  • Submission by the applicant of Application Form together with all required supporting documentation authenticated by Proposer/Seconder or Referees as per the Application Guide Notes.
  • Application is acknowledged and checked, any missing documentation will be required at this stage.
  • Review of application by the Membership, Education and Registration Committee (MERC)
  • Notification of the Committee Decision plus any request for additional information required.
  • Where required a Professional Review Interview (PRI) is arranged. This will be the case for ALL applications linked to Engineering Council registration and may also be required of applicants seeking membership only.
  • Result of PRI reviewed by MERC and if approved MERC confirms the class of membership/registration awarded
  • Notification of outcome with requests for fees followed by issue of membership certification and welcome pack
  • TWI registers applicant with Engineering Council (if applicable)
  • Applicant receives confirmation of registration direct from Engineering Council

For all applicants applying via the Individual Route (the route for applicants without the exemplifying qualifications for the class of membership/registration sought) the process may be different depending on the portfolio of the applicant and the Individual Route Option chosen. For more guidance on the Individual Route process, please contact staff at TWI.
