The United Kingdom Section of the International Institute of Welding
The UK Section of IIW is the title of IIW's Member Society in the United Kingdom. It comes under the auspices of the Welding and Joining Society which in turn is an activity of TWI.
The UK Section of IIW is administered by a Committee composed of:
D Widgery, ESAB Group - Chairman
T J Jessop, TWI
C S Wiesner, TWI
A Hannan, BSi
D S Smith, Downham Technology Ltd
D Jordan, NiDI
J S Smith, University of Liverpool
D Yapp, Cranfield University
D Howarth, Lloyd's Register
J Fieret, Linde Group
C S Colegate, TWI - Secretary
The main objectives of the Committee are:
- To ensure that all UK interested parties derive the maximum advantage from TWI's membership of the International Institute of Welding (IIW).
- To appoint or replace United Kingdom delegates to the Governing Council of I IW, and to advise them how to cast the United Kingdom vote on the Council.
- To appoint delegates to the Commissions and other working units of IIW and to replace these delegates as appropriate.
- To make arrangements to ensure that United Kingdom delegates on the Commissions and other working units of IIW can receive, by means of Briefing Groups, the view of the representative circles in the United Kingdom on the matters
which, in their capacity as delegates, they are asked to consider.
- To arrange for co-operative work to be carried out in the United Kingdom between such persons, firms or other bodies as the Committee shall think fit, as a contribution to the programme of work of IIW.
- To disseminate as widely as possible in British industry the results of the work of IIW through the Welding and Joining Society and, in particular, the Technical Groups.
- To ensure that the United Kingdom is represented by delegates of appropriate professional standing and experience at the meetings of the Commissions and other working units.
- To invite from time to time IIW to hold Annual Assemblies and meetings of Commissions and other working units in the United Kingdom and to ensure that appropriate hospitality is provided for such Assemblies and meetings.
- To undertake such other activities as may from time to time be necessary in order to promote effective United Kingdom participation in the work of IIW and to disseminate the results of this work throughout the United Kingdom
through presentations at Technical Groups and other such functions.
- To organise a meeting once a year, usually at the Annual Assembly, open to all delegates, at which there will be presentations about the work of IIW and opportunities for discussion.
Representatives from the UK section present reports from IIW Annual Assemblies. Copies of the UK delegates reports from the 2005 IIW Annual Assembly in Prague are available from carol.colegate@twi.co.uk.
A number of members, usually three, retire each year and are replaced by candidates elected from nominations invited from members of the UK delegation.
Subject to availability, copies of IIW documents can usually be purchased from the TWI Library at a nominal charge to members. TWI Library will inform you if documents are unavailable in the UK. You will then be advised to request documents from the IIW Secretariat in Paris.
If you would like to take part in IIW activities at any level, either as a delegate to an IIW Working Unit or as a member of a Briefing Group or Sub-Commission, you can do so through membership of WJS . This in turn gives you access to a whole range of benefits:
