Richard Dolby - Rolls-Royce Prize
What is the Richard Dolby - Rolls-Royce Prize?
The Richard Dolby - Rolls-Royce prize is a new award to be presented biennially by the WJS Younger Members Committee (YMC). The second award will be made in 2009 and is sponsored by Rolls-Royce plc.
The cash prize (£1,000) will be awarded to the young person (or to a group of people, if involved in a joint project), who have no more than five years experience after completing full time education. Those eligible for consideration should be in membership of The Welding Institute/Welding & Joining Society, and will demonstrate success in, and enthusiasm for, welding, joining and/or materials engineering at the early stage of their career.
How is it judged?
The main part of the application will be a brief written description (no more than four A4 pages) of a recent technical engineering project. If short-listed for the final, the candidate(s) will then give a 20 minute presentation based on their project in front of the YMC judging panel at TWI, when the winner will be selected. From the written applications, no more than five will be chosen to go forward for the presentation day final, which will be held in May 2009. The winner selected by the YMC panel may also be invited to repeat their presentation at a subsequent TWI event.
The style of the written project description should be aimed at someone in your peer group with a technical, but non-specialist background. The project should be based on work carried out by the candidate(s) within the last 5 years. The award is not solely given for technical success, and candidates' commitment and enthusiasm for the subject of welding, joining and/or materials engineering will form a significant part of the judging criteria.
How do I apply?
Candidates for consideration would normally be nominated by their WJS Branch Committee, a TWI Industrial Member organisation, or their University/College. The nominator should have seen your proposed presentation and/or reviewed the written description of your project in order to provide their nomination. It is also possible to submit an independent application, if none of the above are appropriate.
Applicants short-listed for the final should be prepared to travel to TWI for the finals presentation event. Applicants will be responsible for their own travel arrangements and any reimbursement of expenses should be agreed with your nominator, e.g. WJS branch, company or university/college.
To apply, please fill out the Application Form overleaf, and send it, along with your CV, and brief (no more than four A4 pages) written description of your project to 'Dr Tom Howes, WJS Younger Members Committee, The Welding Institute, Granta Park, Great Abington, Cambridge CB21 6AL'.
The deadline for applications for the 2009 Richard Dolby - Rolls-Royce Prize is 30th March 2009.
