Application for professional membership
Guidance notes (TWI/PM/3 Issue No. 6 January 2006)
1. Completing the membership application form and application for transfer form
- The application form covers all classes of professional membership, namely:
Engineering Council (UK) level Fellow (FWeldI) CEng Senior Member (SenMWeldI) CEng Member (MWeldI) CEng/IEng Incorporated Member (IncMWeldI) IEng/EngTech Technician (TechWeldI) Eng Tech Senior Associate (SenAWeldI) -
- Please study
Classes of Membership setting out the requirements for each class of membership and indicate on the application form the class which you believe to be appropriate to your
qualifications and experience. Please state if you wish your application to be considered for Engineering Council (UK) registration.

Supporting documents are required as follows:

For all applicants, a
CV to include each job within at least the past 10 years, a brief statement (100 words) about job title and specification, responsibilities, number of subordinate staff, achievements,
nature of employer's business and number of employees. For jobs held more than 10 years ago, you need show employer and job title only. Your CV must be authenticated by your proposer, seconder or referees.
- For all applications
other than those seeking senior associate or technician membership, a training report must be included to provide details of your practical training and/or periods of experience deemed to have provided training.
The report should comprise at least 500 words and must be authenticated by proposer, seconder or a referee.
Note: If you are already an EngTech, IEng or CEng registered with the Engineering Council (UK) you may omit the Training Report if you are seeking a class of membership at the same level. If you are seeking to upgrade your Professional Membership class a Training Report will be required.
- For all applicants
other than those seeking Senior Associate membership, copies of all educational certificates, authenticated by proposer, seconder or a referee, must be provided as proof of academic qualifications.
NB: Applications cannot be processed until relevant certificates are submitted.
For applicants who will be seeking CEng registration, a case study which demonstrates your engineering competence is helpful to the Membership, Education and Registration Committee.

For all applicants, a

- Those seeking Senior Associate membership need complete only Sections 1, 2 or 3, 4, 8 and 9 of the Application Form. Please note that the CV described above is also required.
- Please print out the form and complete it clearly, by typing and printing in black. The PDF file has been processed so that you can type into many of the fields before printing but real signatures are required. Ensure that the
information requested is entered in the appropriate spaces on the form and complete all sections. Please provide comprehensive descriptions to support your application.

- If you are using the alternative of referees instead of a proposer and seconder already in membership of this Institute,
make sure that their full names and addresses are given.
- Check that all sections of the form and all associated documents have been initialled by proposer, seconder or referees.
- Make sure that you have signed and dated the form before it is returned to us.

For new applications, the application fee of £60 should be sent with the application form; the entrance fee and first annual subscription become payable on election to membership.

For transfers from one class to another, there is a transfer fee of £40 which should be sent with the application form; any amount due following election to another class will be notified.
NB: Please note you should keep your own copy of your application. We regret we are unable to copy or return submitted applications.
Election
Upon receipt, your application will be acknowledged and then passed to the Professional Membership Office where it will be checked to ensure that it has been correctly completed and that all the necessary documentary evidence has been provided. You will be advised if you need to provide anything further.
- When it is complete, your application will then go forward to the next meeting of the Membership, Education and Registration Committee which meets five times per year.
- Following the meeting, you will be notified of the Committee's decision and if Professional Review is not required you will be asked to pay the necessary fees; on receipt of this payment your election will be confirmed.
- If
Professional Review is required, (NB this is mandatory for CEng/IEng applications) arrangements will be made for you to attend an interview. Assessment from this interview will be brought
back to the Committee for further review. You will then receive notification of the Committee's decision and you will be asked to pay the necessary fees, including Engineering Council (UK) registration fees (if relevant); on receipt
of payment your election and registration (if applicable) will be confirmed.
- If your election to the class sought is not approved and another class is offered, you will be given the reasons for the decision and appropriate advice will be offered.
- In due course you will receive a membership certificate showing the class to which you have been elected or transferred.
