Requirements for the Class of TECHNICIAN (TechWeldI)

The class of Technician recognises those qualified at EngTech, but who have also gained knowledge, understanding and experience of welding/joining, or an allied technology. Candidates should fulfil the following requirements:

Engineering Education	A National Certificate or National Diploma in Fabrication, Engineering and Welding Technology subject OR The City & Guilds Higher Professional Diploma in Engineering OR A technical certificate as part of an approved Advanced Modern Apprenticeship Programme OR An approved level 3 NVQ or SVQ OR A work based learning route approved by the Institute e.g. CSWIP Registered Senior Welding Inspector OR Qualifications in similar areas providing they are assessed as equivalent b May be eligible for Engineering Technician Registration with the Engineering Council (UK) - Fact Sheet III
Plus Knowledge of Welding Technology	AND Demonstrate that he/she has acquired knowledge of welding/joining technology or in an engineering subject appropriate to this class by: TWI Welding Technician Certificate City & Guilds Course 2150 Welding Engineering Craft Studies Part 3 Certificate or 2290 Fabrication & Welding competences Part 3 Certificate, ABC 165 course in Welding Levels 1, 2 and 3 The Diploma of European Welding Specialist A combination of evidence which may be a mix of original work comprising, for example, company manuals (eg quality and welding procedures), reports, course certificates and other items which collectively indicate that the candidate has a knowledge of welding/joining or an allied technology.
Plus Training	AND Have undergone an approved programme of training in engineering or in another appropriate technical or scientific field, of two years minimum duration.
Plus Experience	AND Have had experience of a scientific or technical nature, extending over not less than two years minimum duration, in relation to the development of welding/joining or one of the allied processes.
Plus Professional Development	AND Maintain and enhance competence with professional development through personal reviews and objectives, related activities, provision of evidence and evaluation of outcomes.

Alternatively, Route B

Candidates without the qualifications listed above may be able to apply for a Route B Appraisal. This separate procedure involves an in depth appraisal of the knowledge and experience acquired. Experienced, practising professional Engineering Technicians are often found to have gained the necessary knowledge and skills for their job through working closely with other skilled colleagues over a number of years.
Candidates with craft level qualifications and appropriate experience can apply for the class of Technician Membership of The Welding Institute. The Membership, Education and Registration Committee will advise if a modified form of processional review interview is required.

Fees are due at submission of application and are non-refundable.

Application fee payable on submission of application: £60
NB: Fee to be offset against appropriate entrance fee for those candidates not requiring an Appraisal Interview. If an Appraisal Interview is conducted the £60 will be used to cover the cost.
Transfer fee payable on submission of application: £40
If a Professional Review Interview is required no additional charge will be made.
