Arc Welding Technical Group (TG2)
Introduction: Arc welding did not come into practice until late 1800s, though examples of forge welding go back to the Bronze Age and the Iron Age. The electric arc was discovered in 1800 initiating the development of arc welding which continued with the invention of metal electrodes in the late 1800s. Around 1900, Strohmenger released in Britain a coated metal electrode which gave a more stable arc. In 1919, alternating current welding was invented but did not become popular for another decade. With all the developments of variants in arc welding in over a century, it accounts for about 80% of welding processes used worldwide, though newer welding technologies such as laser, friction welding and hybrids are gaining popularity. Therefore arc welding is and will remain an irreplaceable constituent of fabrication and manufacturing.
Past topics covered: All arc welding processes; practical applications of arc welding; welding consumables; welding of tube and pipe; industrial productivity, robots; health and safety; computer software, welding applications, management control; national and international standards, application and control of welding processes; quality control, acceptance criteria and management control systems; IIW activities briefing of UK IIW representatives, weld cladding/hardfacing, offshore welding.
