* Lessons from catastrophic weld failures
Joint meeting with Leeds Assoication of Engineers Dr Geoff Booth MA PhD CEng FWeldI MIMechE, TWI Ltd
Catastrophic failures have been the catalyst for both the origination of structural codes and standards and their subsequent development and improvement into the documents we have today. The presentation describes landmark failures and shows how the information gained has been used to improve design procedures. In particular, two recent failures, one of a complete separation of a ship and one of the collapse of a offshore oil mooring tower, are fully described and illustrated. In both cases, poor welding practice was responsible for the loss of many millions of pounds.
